Shout-out of the Week: Dumpstaphunk

Last Sunday, West End Trading Co. in Sanford, Florida, hosted an all-out funk extravaganza, featuring several local bands and the New Orleans-based Dumpstaphunk (dumpstaphunk.com). This was my first introduction to the five-piece ensemble, and I was more than impressed.

I hadn't gotten down so hard in so long. After the show, my joints ached for all the shaking. Every single member of the band brought it: the infamous Ivan Neville on keys, Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III on bass, Ian Neville on guitar, and Nikki Glaspie on drums. Right from the get-go, the jams were tight, funky, and fresh, all the way down to the closer, "Put It in the Dumpsta," that played in my head the rest of the night.

If you haven't been introduced, acquaint yourself. Visit the website for two free downloads and see what you've been missing. You won't regret it. I know I need more funk in my life, and you could probably use some, too. Stay tuned for the band's new album, Dirty Word, to be released in May.
